UK transit and Schengen visas

We were chatting at a family get-together and this subject came up during our conversation ...
A family member related how she was left stranded at O.R. Tambo Airport en route to Sweden, as she did not know that she had to apply for a visa to the UK even if you were not leaving the airport. I did a search on UK transit visas for South Africans and came up with this information. South African passport holders in transit through the UK en-route to the USA, Canada, New Zealand or Australia may travel under the ‘Transit Without a Visa’ (TWOV). Passengers transiting to any of the Schengen countries and who hold a category C (short-term) Schengen visa must still obtain a UK visa. This info is from http://blog.suretravel.co.za/2012/08/clarification-on-uk-transit-visas-for.html.The Schengan area comprises 26 European countries that have abolished any passport or border control at any of their internal border areas, therefore this rule applies to these countries only.
