We stayed at the Paul and Virginie Hotel. After a long taxi ride it was a relief to come to a clean and comfortable room. We arrived late at night, and only when we got up the next morning, did we realise that our hotel room was situated almost on the beach. It was such a pleasure to get up to the sound of water and to watch the fishermen setting off for their catch of the day.
The breakfast was excellent, with a wide array of jams that included mango and coconut. There was also a wide selection to choose from for dinner.
We hired a taxi driver throughout our trip, as opposed to taking the taxis outside the hotel. As soon as we stepped outside the hotel we were accosted by the taxi mafia who wanted to offer us their service. We decided to go to Grand Baie as we heard that it was a good place to hang out. Our taxi driver was going to pick us up after a few hours. But much to our disappointment it was not, and we walked for hours in the heat looking for a pay phone (we did not own a cell phone back then). Eventually somebody offered to phone our taxi driver for us We were so relieved!
We also visited Port Louis and walked around the markets and the malls. We had a scrumptious biryani here.
